How did you guys do with your fitness goals last week? We’re you only able to workout a few days? Did you reach your goal? Either way, the intent is what is important! If you reached your goal, congrats! That’s amazing! And if you didn’t (like me) having the intent and desire to improve will push you forward next week 😊 These are the classes I’m going to try and complete this week. I don’t think there are many people out there that won’t agree that health and wellness are important aspects of our lives whether it’s long term goals or day to day struggles with diet and exercise. Most people will say it is always in the back of their minds. Is what they’re eating good for them, have the worked out enough for the day/week/month/year. Are they trying to loose weight, get healthier, build more muscle, clear their mind? For me, health and fitness has always been important to me but for the last 5 or so years I’ve struggled to find the balance and the time to exercise regularly. With my background in Dental Hygiene and prior to that, Massage Therapy I am very well versed in the science behind the importance of healthy diet and regular exercise so I struggled with feeling like I could not find the time to consistently work out. I spent years paying for a gym membership that I never went to. I’ve tried DVD workouts that I would stick to for a week or so and then stop. I would struggle with finding the time to go out for a run, which I love to do because running to me is not only exercise but also a way for me to clear my mind. I do not really enjoy pushing a running stroller because 1. it makes it very difficult and 2. It’s difficult to clear your mind when you have a baby or toddler yelling for you to go faster. Recently though I downloaded the Obé app and I love it! It has been the only program that I’ve been able to stick with consistently for the last month or so and I feel motivated to continue to stay with it. Often times I give up on programs because I find it difficult to find 45-60min to exercise as I am sure many of you do also. This app is great because they have options for live classes typically around 30 minutes long but they also have express classes (which I love!) that are anywhere from 10-12 minutes and they work! I’ve mostly only taken the express classes and I’ve already noticed a difference! I feel stronger and leaner and personally, when I notice change whether its physically or mentally it keeps me motivated to continue.

If you haven’t tried the app or are looking for a program that may work for you I highly recommend Obé. I find that if I plan my weekly responsibilities out on Sunday then I am more likely to accomplish my goals. Whether its exercising, planing out my meals or setting a schedule for cleaning/laundry having a list written out and being able to cross an item off helps to clear my mind and feel accomplished.

Let keep each other accountable and focus on fitness and wellness together. I will be posting my schedule of Obé classes that I intend to take for the week every Sunday night in hope to keep myself on track and hopefully motivate you to stay on track as well.

I often get asked how I handle cleaning teeth and being in mouths all day long and the simple answer is that I love it. I find being a Dental Hygienist very rewarding. My day is filled with new people, new conversation, new experiences every hour on the hour each day that I am at work. I’ve met some very interesting people and made some amazing connections with my patients. Even though I only see most patients twice a year we’ve built great relationships with each other and I look forward to seeing them and continuing to grow our friendships.

Dental Hygiene to me is like instant gratification. I usually compare it to ironing or steaming which I recently started and I may love it more than ironing! You have a wrinkly item, hit it with the steamer and BAM! It’s smooth and you can instantly see the results of your work. With dental hygiene, a patient comes in with plaque or tartar (a dirty mouth) and after an hour of work, it’s clean! Every hour on the hour I feel a sense of accomplishment and it’s awesome.

In all seriousness though there is one very important thing that should be done at your dental cleaning appointments and that is a head/neck exam and oral cancer screening. If your hygienist or dentist are not screening you then ask for it! Most people do not spend time inspecting their own mouths and throats so your regular dental appointments are the perfect time for the exam to happen and it can save your life!

Mouth Cancer or Oropharyngeal Cancer is often not thought of as a common form of cancer when in actuality over 600,000 people will be diagnosed worldwide each year according to The WHO. Oral cancer is often caused by alcohol and tobacco use but can also be cause by an HPV infection, sun exposure, diet, etc. Typically people in their 40s are at a higher risk but it’s a good idea to being screenings early on so any changes can be documented. I personally do head and neck exam on each patient regardless of age at every single appointment. It’s less then five minutes of the appointment and can potentially save a life. Early detection can lead to an 83% five year survival rate as opposed to metastasized oral cancer which only has a 36% survival rate. Unfortunately, oral cancer is often found in later stages which is why I stress, if you’re not receiving a head and neck exam at your hygiene appointments than request it! It could be saving your life!

I’ll leave some links for resources regarding oral cancer that I found interesting and helpful
